I think its good to be graphic and let people know what is going on, and ultimately, they tell us what we want to hear. If they went too far people would stop watching/listening, so by continuing to tune in we are telling them that we like the message they are sending.

I think the reason it is so descriptive is to capture the audiences attention. It highlights how tragic and frightening the situation is.
