Fright, fear, terror, disgust or horror. These are the emotions scary movies are meant for. Early horror films often drew inspiration from characters and stories from classic literature, such as Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, The Wolf Man, The Phantom of the Opera and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

For my money, nothing will make you wet your pants like watching Neil Marshall's 'The Descent' on your own, in a dark room and a couch to hide behind :-)

If you like to be scared by things popping out at you, then watch 'The Grudge'. It's pretty scary as far as building tension. The story is also pretty good for a horror movie.

The Shining, and The Exorcist are the best horror movies. The uncut version of The Exorcist is way out there, especially when the girl starts stabbing herself.

My favorite of all time is The Shining.

I also really enjoyed the "Masters of Horror" series that came out, they are available for purchase in a boxed set now.. saw it at Best Buy. Those however are hit or miss somewhat, but still hours of scary enjoyment.

I saw the Uncut version of The Exorcist in the cinema's a few years ago. Great movie, but was it just me or was the bit where they performed all the experiements on the kid almost more terrifying than the demonic bits?

I love Psycho and all, but I've never really found it scary. Ridiculously well made movie though.

Not sure about how to define 'best' really for scary movies, as thrillers and comedies are more my thing. Nevertheless, some months agp my flatmates and I watched Paranormal Activity, having bought it on impluse in Asda.

The start of the film, I was left wondering where the scary stuff was. It didn't take all that long for that to start, but by far and away, the last few minutes of it were scary. Very scary. The screams from the girl still make me shudder, then the scream from the guy shortly after was just as bad.

The last scene in the bedroom though, when you wonder what's happened, is in my eyes the scariest moment of the whole thing. If you've not seen it, I hope I'm not giving away anything.

If you want some right proper scares, this supernatural horror, based on actual events, will be right up your alley. Just don't, whatever you do, watch it just before you go to bed. Seriously, every now and again I still picture that last few minutes in my head and it still scares me!
