Thursday morning brainteaser

Postby paul on Thu Jun 12, 2008 11:17 am

There are two strings that each take one hour to burn from one end to the other.

They burn rate varies - ie. it may burn half the string in 20 minutes and then the other half in 40minutes - but it will burn the whole string in 60 minutes.

Using the two bits of string, and a lighter, how do you time 45 minutes exactly?

Without a google - and having spent the past 35 minutes on this damn question I believe the answer is to:-

Burn both ends of one string and one end of the other
When the string that has both ends alight burns out then light the other end of the other piece of string.

This will be 45 minutes. Where's my prize?

Try this one for size:-

On a wall are 3 standard on/off switches. One (and only one) controls a light bulb inside a light-tight, well-insulated closet. The other two switches do nothing. You can only open the closet door once, and cannot touch/change any switches after the door is open (or re-closed, for that matter). Damaging or disassembling the door, walls, or switches is against the rules.

Within these constraints, can you determine with certainty which switch controls the light bulb?

Clue - work on the premise that you have 5 senses and that 2 of the senses are independently capable of determining if a lightbulb has been on is still on. That's your clue.

Google = forbidden!
